What stood out to me during my experience as a student at The Beacon School was the similarity in the way of thinking between myself, my peers, and the staff. Whether we had spent years at the institution or were new to the community, the core principles that Beacon preaches were consistently implemented by everyone. We all actively engaged in the 12 learner principles, confident that we were in a safe space to experiment, stretch, and learn. Eventually, I formed strong bonds with several teachers who I am in frequent contact with even to this day.

The early introduction to, and emphasis on critical thinking, has helped me evolve into the professional I am today. Regardless of what field of work I find myself in, critical thinking remains the supreme skill to exercise and a differentiator/cornerstone for leadership and authentic value-add. From that too is the need to have an open mind to other people’s perspectives, to things unfamiliar, and to have a curiosity for challenging things.

The ability of The Beacon School to blur the dividing line between students and staff has always intrigued me. Through my shared experiences with teachers and non-academic staff, I learned to respect the people who contribute to the well-being of my community and gained a more relevant understanding of the Philippine socio-economic context.
“In 8th grade, the Filipino Advanced class did a mash up of ‘Mr. Sauve, Bebot, and Bongga Ka day.’ That was one of the best performances ever.”
Some of my fond memories at Beacon include the Middle School mixers: great music, free food, and I always won the ‘best dancer’ award. There were also the Christmas and Filipino week performances, particularly in 8th grade, where the Filipino Advanced class did a mash-up of “Mr. Sauve, Bebot, and Bongga Ka day.” That was one of the best performances ever.
